I am delighted to serve as President of the Orchard Downs Family Housing Council (FHC) for the upcoming year 2008-09 and want to offer my sincere thanks to residents for giving me this opportunity to serve our community. I believe that Community Development has many meanings and elicits different interpretations and ways of practice for different groups of people. Most often, the differences lie in who the players are and what their roles are, the approach that is taken, and the methods used to bring the community together. We at Orchard Downs truly are a world in one community.
The focus of Family Housing Council is to build community and believes that everyone has a talent or gift to share with others and opportunities must be created where the interchange can happen. Often people require a connection to start talking and sharing. FHC includes everyone; it encourages conversation and creates an environment where people can become acquainted, relationships can grow and people are interested and motivated to support each other. As a registered student organization that belongs in University Housing we will collaborate with Family & Graduate Housing to serve our residents better.
FHC has already begun work 1) to enhance usage of our website www.odfhc.org by our residents to become aware of the resources available through FHC & FGH. 2)There will be a special focus on new incoming residents to develop a sense of membership in our Orchard Downs community and in the University 3) establish fair and consistent election procedures 4) document procedures for obtaining garden plots 5) collaborate with FGH for programming by sponsoring T-shirts for the upcoming Fall Festival on Saturday, August 30 at the Orchard Downs Community Center 6) job duties of FHC board members and employees will be posted on the website 7) social, cultural, educational, diversity, & civic engagement programs organized by FHC will be posted in a timely manner.
